Adding Integers
Standard
7.N.6 Use the inverse relationships of addition and subtraction, and of multiplication and division, to simplify computations and solve problems, e.g., multiplying by 1/2 or 0.5 is the same as dividing by 2.
Cluster
C14
Objective
To use rules to add integers
Lesson
Using Tiles
If the signs are the same, add the numbers’ absolute values and retain the same sign.
Example: -11 + -8 = -19
If the signs are different, subtract the numbers’ absolute values and retain the sign of the number with the greater absolute value.
Example: -11 + 8 = -3
Use Positive and Negative tiles (Red = Negative, Yellow = Positive)
2 + (-5) = -3
A positive and a negative cancel, you're left with 3 negatives
Using a Number Line
A number line is another model you can use to add integers
-8 +3 = 5
Start at 0, To represent -8 move 8 places to the left. To add 3, moceve 3 places to the right.
